The Cape Hole at Patterson: What Seth Raynor Built and What a Lesson Taught Me

The 12th at The Patterson Club is a Cape template — water on the left, green angled away, the hazard built into the strategy. C.B. Macdonald invented the hole at National Golf Links. Seth Raynor built it in Fairfield, Connecticut. Here's what happens when your swing meets the architecture.

There is a hole at The Patterson Club that keeps finding my golf ball. It's the 12th — a par 3 with a creek running along the left side of the green at a diagonal angle. From the tee, the water looks like it's behind the green. It's not. It's beside it, and it's waiting for the shot that starts right and leaks left, or the shot that starts left and never comes back.

I've been in that creek more times than I want to count. And last week, in a lesson with Dave Theise at GolfTec Westport, we figured out why.


The Cape Template: What Raynor Was Doing

The 12th at Patterson is a Cape hole — one of C.B. Macdonald's template designs that Seth Raynor, his protégé and construction partner, carried into the courses he built on his own. The template comes from the 14th hole at Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda, which Macdonald designed in 1921. The idea is simple in concept and brutal in execution.

Here's the anatomy of a Cape:

Macdonald built the Cape at National Golf Links of America (the 15th, called "Cape" — the original). Raynor built it at Camargo, at Yale, at Shoreacres, and at The Patterson Club. The template is the same. The execution varies with the land. At Patterson, the creek is a real creek — not a pond, not a manufactured lake — running through the property at a natural angle to the green. Raynor didn't move it. He used it.

The Miss: Why I Keep Finding the Creek

At my July 13 lesson, Dave had me hit 7- and 8-irons — the clubs the 12th demands. The flight pattern was a weak push fade. The ball started right of target and leaked further right, or started at the target and peeled away. Sometimes a pull — starting left and staying left, which is worse, because left at Patterson 12 is the creek.

Dave's diagnosis was precise: the path is coming too much from the outside in the downswing. The club is approaching the ball from an out-to-in angle — not dramatically, but enough. When the path is out-to-in, two things happen:

  1. The ball starts right (push) — the face is slightly open relative to the path, so the ball launches right of the target.
  2. The ball fades further right — the open face relative to the path creates left-to-right spin (for a lefty, that's right-to-left, but the geometry is the same: the ball moves away from the target).

On a normal par 3 with water behind the green, a push fade is annoying. You miss the green right, you chip on, you make par or bogey. On a Cape hole, the push fade is the architecture's trap. The green is angled away from the creek — the left side is deep, the right side is shallow. If you push the ball right, you're in the short side with no green to work with. If you overcompensate and aim left, you're in the creek. The hole is designed to punish exactly the miss I have.

This is what makes template architecture different from penal architecture. A penal hole puts water where you don't want it and dares you to avoid it. A template hole — a Cape — puts the water where your miss pattern already sends the ball, and then asks you to solve the geometry.


The Fix: Towel on the Inside

Dave's resolution was the towel drill. A towel placed on the inside of the swing path, next to the ball — close enough that an over-the-top move will catch it, far enough that a proper in-to-out path clears it. The drill forces the club to approach from the inside. It's not a swing thought. It's a physical constraint. You either find the inside path or you hit the towel.

The goal is not a draw. The goal is center contact. When the path comes from the inside, the strike moves toward the center of the face. When the strike is center, the ball does what the face tells it to do — not what the path forces it to do. The push fade is a path problem that shows up as a contact problem. Fix the path, the contact cleans up, and the ball starts where you aim it.

What Broadie Would Say About the Cape

Mark Broadie's Every Shot Counts — the strokes-gained bible — has a framework that explains exactly why the Cape hole is harder than it looks. Broadie's research found that your dispersion pattern matters more than your average distance. A 160-yard carry with a 20-yard dispersion pattern is better than a 165-yard carry with a 40-yard pattern. The tighter your shot pattern, the more targets you can attack.

The Cape hole is a dispersion test. The green is angled so that the wider, deeper portion is on the water side. To hit the deep part of the green, you have to aim left — toward the creek. But aiming left only works if your dispersion pattern is tight enough that your misses don't reach the water. If your push-fade pattern is 15 yards wide, you can't aim at the left-center of the green because 7-8 yards of rightward leakage puts you in the short side or over the green. If your pattern is 5 yards wide, you can aim left-center and trust that your worst miss is still on the green.

A 280-yard average with 60-yard dispersion beats 290 with 90-yard dispersion. Strategy produces faster scoring improvement than swing mechanics. Mark Broadie, Every Shot Counts

This is why the towel drill matters more than "aiming better." Aiming better doesn't help if your dispersion pattern is wider than the green. The towel drill tightens the pattern by forcing an in-to-out path, which produces center contact, which produces a tighter dispersion. Once the pattern is tight, you can choose a line. Until it's tight, you're just picking which side of the green to miss on.

Broadie's data also explains why the Cape feels harder than a flat par 3 of the same yardage. On a flat par 3 with no water, your dispersion pattern determines whether you hit the green or miss it — but the miss is recoverable. On a Cape, your dispersion pattern determines whether you're in the creek. The penalty for the same shot is different. The architecture changes the cost of your dispersion, not the shape of it.


The Lesson and the Architecture

The temptation on a Cape hole is to treat it as a water hazard — to worry about the water, to aim away from it, to play safe. But the Cape isn't a water hazard. It's a template. The water is part of the design, not an obstacle in it. The hole was built to test whether you can commit to a line that carries trouble and trust that your shot pattern is tight enough to handle it.

My push fade makes that commitment impossible right now. The pattern is too wide. The ball leaks too far right, or pulls too far left. I can't aim at the deep part of the green because my misses cover the creek. So I aim at the short side — the safe bunker right — and hope to get up and down. That's not strategy. That's survival. The architecture is working exactly as designed: it's exposing the gap between my shot pattern and the target the hole demands.

The fix isn't more practice. The fix is better practice — the towel drill, the in-to-out path, the center contact that tightens the pattern. Once the pattern is tight, the Cape becomes what Raynor intended: a strategic choice, not a prayer. You pick the line. You commit. You let the architecture decide whether your shot is good enough.

I'll know the drill is working when I can stand on the 12th tee at Patterson, aim at the back bunker, and know — not hope — that the ball will draw back toward the green. That's the Cape hole played correctly. The water is still there. The angle is still there. But the decision is mine, not the creek's.
