The Architect

Walter Travis had two careers, and he was world-class at both. Born in 1862 in Maldon, Australia, he emigrated to America at 23 as a hardware salesman. He didn't touch a golf club until he was 35, in 1896. Five years later, he won the U.S. Amateur. Then he won it again in 1902. Then again in 1903. Along the way, he became the first non-British player to win the British Amateur in 1904 — using a center-shafted putter called the Schenectady that the R&A promptly banned. Travis, unfazed, had already moved on.

As a player, Travis was short off the tee but deadly around the greens — an archetype that would later inform his design philosophy. He believed golf was won with the short game, and his courses reflect it. After retiring from competitive play, he founded The American Golfer magazine and began designing courses. He taught himself architecture by traveling to the UK and studying the great links, then brought that knowledge back to America with a fierce, opinionated edge.

Travis was a controversial figure. He criticized American courses as too easy, too flat, and too forgiving, and he wasn't shy about saying so in print. The USGA establishment didn't love him. But his courses demanded precision — small, well-defended greens, deep bunkers, and approaches that required thought, not just power. He designed or remodeled roughly 50 courses before dying in 1927 at age 65.

Design Philosophy

Travis's architecture was shaped by his own game: if you couldn't overpower a course, you had to outthink it. His courses reward placement over distance and short-game precision over brute force. He was an early advocate of the "championship tee" — the idea that a course should be able to stretch to test the best while remaining playable for members from forward tees. He also believed deeply in the value of undulating greens that rejected indifferent approaches.

His signature was the "Travis bunker" — deep, chocolate-drop mounds of sand, often raised above the level of the fairway or green, inspired by the revetted pot bunkers he studied in Scotland. He placed them with surgical precision: where a lazy approach would inevitably drift, where a conservative line left a tougher angle, where the eye naturally wanted to look but the ball shouldn't go.

Travis also pioneered the idea that a golf course should be beautiful as well as challenging. He planted trees strategically for framing — not for penalizing errant shots, but for creating corridors and sightlines. He was one of the first American architects to talk about the aesthetic experience of a round as equal in importance to the competitive test. For a man who won three U.S. Amateurs, that's saying something.

Notable Courses (Not on the Wall)

Garden City Golf Club (1902, remodel) is Travis's most famous work — a Long Island links-style gem where he served as a member and used the course as his personal laboratory for design ideas. It's routinely ranked among the Top 100 Courses in America, a testament to strategic architecture built before the power game existed. Hollywood Golf Club (1915) in Deal, New Jersey is a Travis original with rolling terrain and deep bunkers that disguise the course's length. Country Club of Scranton (1925) in Pennsylvania is a late-career design with some of his most aggressive bunkering. Cherry Valley Club (1916) on Long Island shows his ability to work with a smaller site and still produce 18 interesting holes. Westchester Country Club (1922) was a major remodel for Travis — he rebuilt the bunkering and greens completely, transforming a pleasant country club into a championship test that later hosted PGA Tour events for decades. Ekwanok Country Club (1900, consulted) in Vermont shows his early influence before he formally hung out his shingle as an architect.
