Donald Ross lived in a house behind the third green. He tinkered with this course for forty years. When Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw restored it in 2011, they didn't just pull back decades of overgrowth — they uncovered Ross's original intent: wiregrass, sandy waste areas, and greens that ask you to think from 100 yards out. It's the course that made the Sandhills sacred, and it's still the best thing in town.
Payne Stewart made that putt on 18 in 1999 — one hand thrust toward the sky, one leg kicked back — and the bronze statue behind the green captures that moment forever. You walk past it on your way to your second shot and suddenly your double bogey doesn't matter quite as much.
