The Verdict

Royal Lytham is the most unconventional links on the Open rota. It starts on a par-3 — the only Open course that does that. It has 200 bunkers and no sea view. The Irish Sea is hidden behind a row of houses, and you wouldn't believe you're anywhere near water. But the turf is links-fast, the wind is links-honest, and the bunkering is links-punishing. Seve won here twice from the car park. That's the Lytham character in one sentence: unconventional, unforgiving, and capable of crowning genius.

What to Expect

• 200 bunkers — Lytham has more sand than any other Open venue. They're not decorative. They're everywhere, and they dictate strategy on every single hole.
• No sea view — unusual for a links, but the wind still howls through. You're playing links golf without the visual cues. Makes club selection harder.
• Opening with a par-3 — the only Open rota course that starts this way. Sets an unconventional tone immediately.
• Seve's course — two Claret Jugs, both won from positions off the fairway that would have broken most players. Lytham rewards creativity under pressure.
• 18 holes packed into a tight property — surrounded by houses on three sides. Every yard counts. The routing is a masterclass in land-use efficiency.
