James Braid's most underrated on England's Golf Coast. S&A sits in the shadow of Royal Birkdale — literally, they share a fence — but that's a mistake people make once. Two-time Ryder Cup host, two-time Open final qualifying site, and home to the best collection of short par-4s no one talks about. The clubhouse is the best in English golf, and yes, they'll pour you a proper pint.

What to Expect

• Braid's bunkering — deep, steep-faced, and strategically placed. Less penal than Birkdale next door, more playful than Lytham down the road.
• The short par-4s — S&A has a run of them that asks for creativity, not power. Play the ground game or pay the price.
• Gumbley's Bunker on 16 — the face is sleepered with railway ties, 25 feet deep. Named for a player who couldn't get out. The best story on the course.
• The clubhouse — two-tiered, Tudor-style, wood-paneled. A post-round pint here is worth the price of admission.

Private club. Visitor tee times available through the pro shop. ~30 minutes north of Liverpool, next door to Royal Birkdale. Play it paired with Birkdale or as part of an England's Golf Coast run (Hoylake → Formby → S&A → Birkdale). Summer is prime but windy year-round — the turf stays fast.
