The Verdict

Spyglass Hill is the most underrated course on the Monterey Peninsula — and it's not even close. The best first five holes in golf: dunes, ocean views, and routing that brings you to the edge of the continent before turning inland. Then the Del Monte Forest kicks your teeth in. RTJ Sr. built two different courses here: the coastal opener that makes you feel like a hero, and the tree-lined gauntlet that reminds you who you actually are. Tougher than Pebble, more demanding tee-to-green, and arguably the better test of golf. If Pebble is the movie star, Spyglass is the character actor who steals every scene.

What to Expect

Holes 1–5 — the coastal stretch. Dunes, cypress, and Pacific Ocean views that rival anything at Pebble. The 4th is a gorgeous downhill par-4 heading toward the water.
Hole 6 and beyond — the forest. The course turns inland into the Del Monte Forest, and the difficulty ramps up significantly. Narrow corridors, elevation changes, and greens that require precision.
RTJ Sr.'s green complexes — subtle but demanding. Uphill approaches are common, and the greens are smaller than they look.
AT&T Pro-Am rotation — plays alongside Pebble and Monterey Peninsula in the annual PGA Tour event.
Bring your A-game — this is the hardest course in the Pebble Beach rotation. Higher slope rating than Pebble.
