Gil Hanse's 9-hole par-3 course at Pinehurst is proof that the best golf experience isn't always the longest or the most expensive. The Cradle sits in the shadow of the resort's championship courses, but it might be the most purely enjoyable round on the property. Music plays from speakers tucked into the landscaping, the drink cart makes frequent passes, and you're playing with a handful of wedges and a putter. It's 789 yards of pure fun. The greens are Hanse-quality — interesting, bold, and in perfect condition. Bring a Transfusion, grab your buddies, and loop it twice. This is what golf should feel like more often.

What to Expect

• 9 holes, par-3 — holes range from 56 to 137 yards. Bring wedges, a putter, and maybe your favorite short iron.
• Music on the course — speakers throughout the property. The vibe is social, not serious.
• Get a Transfusion — the signature drink of The Cradle. Vodka, ginger ale, grape juice. It's practically mandatory.
• Loop it twice — the standard play is 18 holes: two loops around the nine. Different tees each time if you want variety.
• Thistle Dhu next door — the massive putting green adjacent to The Cradle. Grab a beer and settle some bets.
• Hanse's touch — these aren't flat pitch-and-putt greens. They have contour, collection areas, and genuine design character.
