The Patterson Club just reopened after a complete renovation by Jaeger Kovich of Proper Golf, and the result is remarkable. The nines were flipped — the old back nine is now the front — and the course flows better for it. The former par-5 9th hole is gone, replaced by a reshuffled routing. Old #17 (now #8) had its green blown up and moved back over 100 yards to become a legitimate par 5. The most dramatic change: old #18, a downhill par 4 that members consistently loathed, is now a semi-blind par 3 playing ~235 yards from the tips — a bold, fun closer that rewards commitment.
The previous iteration of Patterson was punishing: almost every green was guarded by front bunkers, demanding aerial approaches and rejecting anything short. Jaeger's renovation has added playability by cutting bump-and-run lanes into most greens when approached from the right angle. Higher handicaps now have a ground option. Lower handicaps still get their test — the back tees stretch to ~7,100 yards with a 74.5 rating and 133 slope. The bunkering, always the star here, remains deep, sculptural, and beautifully placed. It's one of the best bunker sets in the Northeast, and the renovation made them fairer without neutering them. RTJ Sr.'s bones are intact. Jaeger just made them breathe.
